Raised Bed Percolation - StonePad

Construction of a Raised Bed

To construct the stone pad, clear the vegetation from an area (see table below). Fill this area with soil (percolation T value 7-20) to the required depth and ensure that the surface is level. Place a pad of clean broken stone in the centre of the raised mound and ensure that it is level. Place pipes on the stones and secure the pipes with more stone. The stone pad must then be covered with a geo-textile membrane before the final covering of soil is applied. A minimum recommended cover depth of soil is 300mm. Constructed mounds benefit from interceptor drains constructed around the perimeter of the mound and drained to the nearest land drain. In the case of spreading the secondary effluent over a polishing filter using distribution gravel and with direct discharge from the polishing filter to groundwater through soil or bedrock, the loading rates (See p. 46- 47 section. 4.11.1.1 - 4.11.1.2 of EPA Waste Water Treatment Manuals: Treatment Systems for Single Houses 2000) on the soil or bedrock should not exceed the rates as detailed in this table for 8 P.E.
